Parish Council Blog

feb 2021

Welcome to the October Parish Council Blog, this month we are going to talk about the Gretton Paddock (Pocket) Park and the Queens Green Canopy.

Gretton Paddock Park

You may have not heard of Pocket Parks, the idea of them originated in Northamptonshire. They are natural areas of countryside which are owned, looked after, and cherished by the local community for peaceful enjoyment, the protection of wildlife and to provide access to all. Gretton Pocket Park was established in 1994 and was named Paddock Park by children at the Primary School. Our Park was the 50th Pocket Park in Northamptonshire.

The Paddock Park is located opposite Gretton House on the High Street, you can access it from here or round the corner on Kirby Road. It is popular with dog walkers and is a lovely quiet area in the village. If you have not been through it, you should have a little walk around it and enjoy another lovely area of our wonderful village.

The Paddock Park Group are a small group, they have about 6 regular volunteers and are always looking for help, they meet on the first Saturday of every month (weather dependent) any time between 9.30 and 12.30. They won’t ask you to make a regular commitment, but it is a lovely way to meet new people and to help with a village asset.

If you would like to help or would like some more information, then please contact the Paddock Park Secretary Bob Dobson on 01536 770734 to discuss.

The Queens Green Canopy

“The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.

Everyone from individuals to Scout and Girlguiding groups, villages, cities, counties, schools and corporates will be encouraged to play their part to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season between October to March. Tree planting will commence again in October 2022, through to the end of the Jubilee year.

With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations.

As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen’s Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty’s 70 years of service”.

As a Parish Council we are very keen to get involved in this and will be discussing it over the coming months so please watch this space for more info. Why not get involved yourself?

Thank you for reading and as always, if you have any questions, views or concerns regarding anything, the Parish Council would love to hear from you, please email our Clerk Jackie on clerkgpc@btinternet.com
